8 Summer Safety Tips for Seniors
Happy summer, all! With the sunny season in full swing here in Clovis, CA, we’ve been planning lots of summertime activities for our seniors (get the full calendar of activities on our activities page!).
Even though the weather is beautiful and it’s tempting to spend most of our time outdoors, we need to be careful about the kinds of summertime risks the heat and sunshine pose for seniors. In this month’s edition of the Orchard Park blog, we’ll be offering up a few tips for how to ensure seniors stay safe, comfortable, and happy during the summer months.
#1 Drink Lots of Water
With the extra heat that the summer brings, it’s easy to become dehydrated. Seniors are already more susceptible to dehydration, so drinking extra water is even more important for our elderly loved ones.
#2 Dress in Layers
The mornings may start out cooler, so it’s easy to be tempted to wear heavier clothing. However, as the day goes on, the temperatures rise. Wear a lightweight tank top or t-shirt underneath your morning sweater, so that you can cool off as the day gets hotter. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that helps prevent too much extra perspiration.
#3 Avoid Caffeine
This is very much linked to #1, as caffeine can be very dehydrating. If you do need to drink caffeine, be sure to drink even more water so as to make up for the loss of hydration.
#4 When the Heat Wave Hits, Stay Indoors
While it may be tempting to catch those rays, when a heat wave hits, it’s best to stay cool indoors. Invest in a fan or air-conditioner. If you know that a heat wave is coming, be sure to check on your elderly loved ones and ensure they have all the water and ventilation they need to stay healthy and hydrated.
#5 Grab Those Hats & Sunglasses!
On a nice sunny day, make sure your senior loved one is protected from the harsh UV sunrays. Apply sunscreen, grab a hat, and don’t forget those sunglasses.
#6 Know the Symptoms of Heat Stroke
The warning signs of overheating include dry, flushed skin; nausea or vomiting; headache; heavy breathing or a rapid pulse; lack of perspiration; and fainting. If your senior loved one begins to experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention right away.
#7 Don’t Spend Extended Time Outside
It’s wonderful to heat outside for a bit, but too much exposure to the heat can be risky. Plan short outings outdoors and then to spend time indoors to cool off and recover.
#8 Check In With Family & Doctors
Check in with the doctor to see if your senior loved one is taking any medications that increase the risk of overheating or dehydration. If you do not live with your senior loved one, be sure someone is nearby to check on them during the summer months, such as a neighbor or in-home caretaker.
