Ways to Stay Young at Heart in 2017
As you can tell from our endless activities and daily celebrations, we’re a fun-loving group of seniors (see our recent post, Never Too Old to Boogie!, for extra proof!). Here at Orchard Park Senior Living, we’re always finding ways to feel forever young. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby or learning a foreign language, we don’t think it’s ever too late to try something new. Love our fun-loving and youthful community spirit? We’ve put together a list of tips for how you can stay young at heart in 2017, no matter what your age may be!
Learn Something New!
Not only is learning fun, but it also keeps our minds sharp! By stimulating our cognitive functions, learning strengthens our brains and memory. In fact, studies show that cognitively active seniors were 2.6 times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and dementia than similarly aged individuals who engaged in less cognitive activity.
As a part of our senior activities program here at Orchard Park, we find lots of ways to keep our residents constantly learning. From music and cooking classes to brain games and geology classes, we have countless offerings to keep our assisted living and memory care residents happy and engaged! We even lead meditation hours, a mindfulness practice that’s known to boost mood and cognition.
Make New Friends and Connections
If you’re looking to broaden your horizons and boost your mood, there’s nothing more rewarding than friendship, socializing, and shared laughs. Bonding with others makes us feel happier, encourages us to have fun, and always teaches us something new!
As we age, it’s common to begin to withdraw and become more isolated. However, it’s important to make sure you get enough social interaction. If you aren’t living in assisted living, ask your friends and family for suggestions about different social opportunities. You could join a community club or group who share similar interests, or you could sign up for a class. Not only will socializing help keep your communication skills intact, but it will also warm your heart and keep you feeling happy and connected.
Stay Active and Hydrated
Staying active helps us to ward off disease, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, and boosts our moods! Not only does it make us feel younger, but it makes us look younger, too! Keeping your skin glowing and your bones strong, regular physical activity does wonders for keeping us happy, healthy, and radiant.
Heavy workouts or excessive exercise are not recommended for the elderly, so it’s also important not to overdo it—and to make sure we’re staying adequately hydrated (at least 8 glasses of water a day is recommended). Healthy, Brain-Boosting Foods!
Here at Orchard Park Senior Living, our residents enjoy three home-cooked, healthy, and nutritious meals each day. Even if you’re not living in an assisted living community, you can still find ways to keep a balanced diet.
Our tip this year? Small, frequent meals, containing super nutritious, brain-boosting ingredients (think: lots of foods rich in Omega-3s!). What are a few of the best foods for your brain? We’re listing a few here, but be sure to consult additional sources for a complete list:
- Avocados. Nutrient-rich and full of “good” fats, avocados keep your skin glowing, blood sugar levels steady, and are known to help improve cognitive function.
- Blueberries. High in antioxidants, blueberries can protect us from the effects of stress and aging.
- Coconut oil. A natural anti-inflammatory, coconut oil is known to help soothe a wide variety of different ailments, from high cholesterol to digestive issues.
- Green, leafy vegetables. Research shows that a diet rich in leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, or chard, can actually help slow mental deterioration. Not only do they help to keep our brains strong, but they also help to keep our bones strong!
A New Year, a New You
These are just a few tips, and we hope that you find them helpful in your quest to feel happy, healthy, and energetic in 2017! What kinds of things help you feel forever young?
